The Australian Olympic Committee in conjunction with the DET School Sport Unit invites secondary schools to select one student in Year 11 or 12 (or year 10 for Central schools or Junior colleges) as the schools recipient of the 2005 Pierre de Coubertin Award. Information and nomination forms were distributed into schools in April or can be obtained from the following link -
The Award program is named after Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Modern Olympics, who believed international competitions between athletes from different countries would promote a more peaceful world. In addition, the Olympic ideals can be used to motivate and encourage all young people to strive for their personal best. The Award is not intended to reward elite performance, but to recognize the student who, through their participation in sport, demonstrates attributes of fair play and respect for others. The Awards began in 1993 and were an integral part of the bidding process for the 2000 Olympic Games. To date around 3000 recipients have received this prestigious award. Should you require further information on the torch relay, please refer to the AOC website www.olympics.com.au or contact the Project Coordinator at the NSW Olympic Council on phone 02 8436 2160.
