004. One Day AUSTSWIM Courses for DET Teachers

Following twelve months development and negotiation with AUSTSWIM in 2005, the School Sport Unit will again faciliatate a number of One Day AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Certificate courses for DET Teachers.

Candidates will be granted prior learning recognition for particular topics for the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Certificate. Nominal hours of theory presenation have been shortened to reflect the educational background of the presenters and participants.

Candidates will be assessed on the this knowledge through a combination of theory and practical assessment. Topics treated will include: the needs of the beginner, safety, principles of movement and stroke progression.

NOTE: these will be the only AUSTSWIM Courses offered in 2007. Spaces are limited and the course takes 9.5 hours.

COST: $165 (includes GST) - fees include course manual, presenters' fee, venue hire and refreshments.

Participants will need to bring

swimming costume       warm clothes / tracksuit       2 x towels
goggles (optional)      writing material        copy of current CPR

ASSESSMENT:   Participants will undertake a number of assessment tasks. These include

150m swim - comprising of 50m of a cpmpetitive stroke and 100m using two survival strokes. There is no time limit.

Teaching Assessment - to be completed by each candidate seeking full accreditation. This can be completed during the School Swimming Scheme (SSS) for your school or at a later date.

Examination - to be completed within 60 days of participation at the course. Exam to be completed under supervision of school Principal or delegated officer.

REFRESHMENTS: continuous tea / coffee, morning tea, lunch
