At the recent U16, U20 and U23 NSW Athletics Championships held on 23/24 February students from Westfields Sports High School performed with flair. James Johnson (Westfields Sports HS) a pathways student. 1st U20 110m Hurdles 14.98 This was a new personal best for James. While only 17 years old, James has convincingly demonstrated dominance in NSW by winning the NSW U18 and NSW U20 titles as well as the Bronze medal at the recent Australian U18 titles. James will travel to the Gold Coast next month to contest the National Junior Titles. Christie Chamberlain (Westfield Sports HS) a former student. 1st U20 Discus 47.72m In winning this event Christie posted her 6th World Junior Championship qualifying performance this season. Christie has a personal best of 49.34 metres (World Junior Standard is 47m). Christie will also go to the Gold Coast next month to compete for a spot in the Australian team to compete at the World Youth titles. Daniel Small (Westfields Sports HS) a former student. 1st U23 110m Hurdles 14.27 This was a brilliant time and makes Daniel, 19 years old, the number three hurdler in the Australian Open rankings. Daniel flies to Brisbane this weekend to contest the Australian Open. There are eleven Westfields athletes competing at the Australian Open Championships in Brisbane this weekend. Dani Samuels (2006 Commonwealth Bronze medallist discus) has already posted two ‘A’ qualifiers for the Beijing Olympics and will secure automatic selection if she wins the Open Title. Dani has won the Australian Open for the past four years. With her current P.B. of 61.92 metres she is odds on favourite with the best throw in the world this year. Fabrice Lapierre (Commonwealth Bronze medallist) will contest the Open Long Jump. Fabrice has a P.B. of 8.19 metres. John Thornell will also contest the Open Long Jump. John has a P.B. of 8.08 metres. There is a good chance both will medal. Karyne Di Marco will be defending her National Hammer Throw title. Breanne Clement will also be throwing along side Karyne in the Hammer Throw. Mark Dickson will be looking for his first National medal after winning his sixth consecutive NSW Open Title earlier. Congratulations to the coaching staff and students at Westfields Sports High School and we wish you every success at the Australian Titles.
