The NSWCHS Boys Volleyball Championships were held at Sydney High School from 26 - 28 March. Congratulations are extended to the Hunter Region who went through the entire carnival with out dropping a set and defeating the Sydney West Region in the final. This is the third year in a row the Boys Volleyball has been won by the same region. The Hunter Region team was coached by Dainis Jaunalksnis from the Hunter Sports HS. The majority of the team came from Great Lakes College Tuncurry Snr Campus and many of these boys were nurtured by Denise Williams at Great Lakes College Forster Campus during their junior secondary schooling. The Hunter Region Team Digby Woods Great Lakes College Tuncurry Senior Campus Alex Aiolupotea (Morisset HS) was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy at the championships. The coaches’ awards for the individual teams’ most valuable players went to the following boys:
The carnival ran smoothly without a hitch due partly to the huge involvement of past and present students. The following students worked for three days tirelessly acting as first and second referees on all the games. Former students Oliver Konakoff (Sydney Boys HS) and Erin Turner (Westfields Sports HS) in a week off from university, were the main referees. Oliver Konakoff was a recipient of a NSWCHS Blue for Volleyball in 2007. Oliver and Erin were ably supported by Sam Wan (Sydney Boys HS) and Thomas Ngugen (Sydney Boys HS) who both officiated as first and second referees. We would also like to acknowledge the work of the student officials from Sydney Boys High School. Hugh Huang, Patrick Lai, Ivan Li, Merlin Li, Jacky Poon, Tony Wang and Nishan Abersuriya were an important integral part of this competition. The boys worked on the games on lines, scoring and recording. They also helped on setting up the gym for games, photocopying and many other jobs thrown their way over the course of the three days. On all occasions they showed initiative. They were courteous and fun to work with at all times. Along with the student referees they are excellent ambassadors for their school. NSWCHS would like to thank these students for their outstanding contribution to the smooth running of the carnival. Sydney Boys High School also billeted all students who required accommodation for the three days of the Championships. This lessened the work of the carnival management enormously because no before and after school billeting runs were necessary. We would like to acknowledge the work of Mr Michael Kay (Sydney Boys HS) who put in hours and hours of work into obtaining these billets. All competitors thoroughly enjoyed this experience. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
