037. NSWCHS Oarsman in “The Race”

11 April

Toby Medaris, a former student of Blaxland High School, was a member of the winning eight in one of the most prestigious events on the British Sporting Calendar.

The Cambridge v Oxford Boat Race is arguably one of the most watched rowing events in the world, bringing in more spectators than at the World Rowing Titles.  The race distance is 4 miles and 374 yards.  The record for this distance is 18 minutes and 26 seconds

Toby Medaris was the heaviest man in the boat weighing in at 16 stone 2lbs although he fell somewhat short of the all time heaviest oarsman who weighed in at 17 stone 6lbs.  Toby, an All Ivy Academic Athlete of the Year while studying at Harvard, is continuing his studies in England for a year.

Toby was part of the Oxford (dark blue crew) which was victorious in this year’s race held on 29 March. No one in the crew, except for the coxswain, was less than 6ft 2in in height.  The British still use the old imperial system of measurement when comparing all statistics in this historic race.

Congratulations are extended to Toby on an outstanding achievement.
