044. The Spirit of Cricket Trophy |
|
|
A new trophy has been sanctioned by the Cricket sub-committee and endorsed by the NSWCHS executive and committee. The trophy will be awarded annually to the team deemed to fit the criteria as laid down by the cricket sub- committee. The sub- committee will look at behaviour, dress, etiquette, and the acceptance of decisions as well as the spirit of sportsmanship shown by players at the NSWCHS State Championships in relation to all aspects of the game. Sally Curry (Goulburn HS) has the girls’ trophy named in her honour. This is a wonderful commendation for Sally. Sally’s comments on hearing this news were: “This is how I would like to be remembered as a cricketer” and “This is the biggest honour of my life.” The recommendation came from Marie Cornish and was warmly endorsed by Sally’s cricketing peers in NSWCHS Cricket. Sally Curry attended Goulburn High School as a student and started playing cricket in Year 10 for the region. Up till this time her experience in cricket had been in the backyard with her dad as the school didn’t have a cricket team. Sally represented South Coast Region in years 10, 11 and 12. Sally captained the South Coast team and was a batter. In 1995 in Year 11 Sally toured with the NSWCHS 1sts to the U.K. After leaving school Sally played with Bankstown for twelve years and captained the team for four years. Sally also played with NSW U18s, U19s and Opens up till 2000. Sally then played with the 2nds until 2006 Sally played with spirit of cricket in mind and would like to be remembered in this way. During her teaching career Sally has coached and managed the South Coast Regional team for six years, coached and managed the NSWCHS 2nds and managed the NSWCHS 1sts. Sally is in the PDHPE faculty at Goulburn High School. Sally was sidelined with knee problems. Because of the tyranny of distance, to come to Sydney every weekend has proved too difficult so Sally plans to coach and stay involved with local cricket and do an umpiring certificate. She has played with the mens’ 1st grade team in Goulburn and hopes to continue playing cricket in a local competition. It is a huge accolade for a sports person to be remembered by their peers in this way. It is a rare honour and one Sally has indicated she will cherish. Congratulations Sally Curry from NSWCHS and NSWPSSA.
