The Australian Team to represent at the Beijing Olympics in August is a mix of youth and experience as borne out by former competitors from NSWCHS ranks who have been selected. Ian Murray (Balgowlah Boys HS) To most Australians with a degree of interest in sport Ian Murray needs no introduction. Ian Murray is one of the best known sailing names in Australia. Ian Murray won six consecutive World Titles sailing in his 18ft skiff from 1977 to 1982. Another highlight in Ian’s life has been his position as Design Team/Project Director and helmsman in the 1987 Kookaburra Syndicate’s America’s Cup Defence. Ian Murray has competed in four America’s Cups, four Sydney to Hobart Races and 3 Admiral’s Cups. His international experience spans over thirty years. Ian Murray and his crew mate Andrew Palfrey will compete in their first Olympics in the Star class. Ian Murray was on the Australian Day Honours’ List in 1992. Darren Bundock (Terrigal HS) Darren Bundock will be sailing a Tornado in the Beijing Olympics. Darren, a third time Olympian, won a silver medal in Sydney and hopes to go one better in August. Darren has won a total of ten World Titles. His latest includes wins in 2006 at the World Championships in the Tornado class in Argentina and in 2007 at the World Championships in the F18 class. Darren has over sixteen years of international competition. Ben Austin (Colo HS) Ben Austin will be attending his first Olympics and sailing with his crewmate Nathan Outteridge in the 49ers. An item on Ben Austin was posted on February 22, 2008. Anthony Nossiter (Malvina HS) Anthony Nossiter will be sailing in the Finn class in his third Olympics. Anthony recently sailed into 10th place in the 2007 ISAF World Championships. The Finn, a single-handed dinghy, is regarded as one of the most physically demanding dinghies to sail. Anthony was placed sixth in this boat at the Athens Olympics. So far Australia’s only Olympic medal in this class is a bronze won by John Bertrand in 1976. Anthony Nossiter comes from a sailing family. His grandfather was the first Australian to sail round the world in a yacht he had built himself in 1937. Nathan Wilmot (Kilarney Heights HS) From a young age Nathan has been involved with water sports. Up to the age of thirteen Nathan was a state level swimmer. Nathan has followed on in his father’s and uncle’s footsteps. Both men competed in sailing at the Olympic Games and were part of the Australia II America’s Cup Crew. In 2007 Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page gained their third win, in their discipline the 470 class, at World Championships. They are only the third pair to achieve this. Nathan first competed in the Olympics at Athens. Nathan and Malcolm are hoping to emulate their latest achievements and bring home gold from China.
