049. Golf – NSWCHS Stroke and Matchplay Championships

12 May

The NSWCHS Golf Championships were held at New Brighton Golf Club, Moorebank from May 5 to Thursday May 8.

It was a superb event.  The setting couldn’t have been more serene, even though the golf club sits close to the M5 motorway; one could imagine the frenetic pace of Sydney to be another world away. It was like a walk in the park for the spectators.  There were ducks, swans and geese and many other birds quite happily enjoying life along the fairways, in the waterways and at the edges of the greens. On the last day near one of the fairways a pelican was sighted watching over the proceedings. So for anyone who wants to treat themselves to a magic day go out to the golf next year and watch the best of the best junior golfers in action.

On the first two days the Strokeplay event was conducted. In this competition 93 boys and 46 girls were entered.  The event is open to NSWCHS, NSWCCC and NSWCIC students.  In the boys the handicaps of the competitors ranged from +2 to 8 and the girls were playing off handicaps of +2 to 30.

Danny An (Marsden HS) won the NSWCHS and All Schools Stroke Play Title.  Danny was also won the NSWGA Schoolboys Champion.  Danny hit a 68 and 71 (five under par).

Justine Lee (Strathfield GHS) won the NSWCHS and All Schools Stroke Play Title.  Justine was the recipient of the Womens’ NSW Golf medal.  Justine hit a 71 and 69 (six under par).

Danny and Justine scooped the pool in the stroke play and won three gold medals each.

Daniel Yu (Normanhurst Boys HS) was runner up in the NSWCHS stroke play with a score of 70 and 74.

Jessica Noh (Marsden HS) was runner up in the NSWCHS stroke play with a score of 72 and 76.

On Wednesday 7 May and Thursday 8 May the Matchplay tournament was conducted.

The Matchplay tournament is limited to 16 boys and 16 girls.  The ten NSWCHS regions can each enter one girl and one boy.  Two competitors from the Catholic system and two competitors from the independent system may also be entered.  The remaining two competitors come from the regions that performed best in the previous year.

Each match consists of 18 holes and the finalists end up playing 36 holes over two days.

All these young golfers are a credit to their schools and coaches.  The way they conduct themselves on the course is faultless and their play is breath taking in so many instances.

Gary Chapman (Jamieson HS) the NSWCHS Golf Convener was responsible for a magnificently and efficiently run Championship.

Don Nelson, a NSWCHS Silver Life Member in Golf, was the Carnival referee and stroke play referee.

Gary Stubbs (East Hills Boys HS) also officiated at the carnival in many areas where required.

The students of NSW were the winners thanks to the numerous hours put in and the efforts of these officials.

East Hills Boys High School provided the billets where required.  Thanks are extended to the principal Mr. Tony Mulligan, the parents and students of the school for making the golfers feel welcome and providing the students with a worthwhile experience which they will treasure.

NSWCHS would also like to thank the management and the members of the New Brighton Golf Club for their understanding, help and support of this tournament.
