058. NSWCHS Convener to Judge at Olympics

6 June

Brett Austine (Belmont HS) is the first Australian Trampoline Judge to hold the Federation of International Gymnastics Brevet 1 Category.  This means that Brett Austine can be put into the chair and on juries for all major international events.

During the Olympic cycle every international duty as a judge is assessed and examined by the International Technical Committee leading to the selection of the top eight judges from around the world for the Olympics.

Brett Austine was named at the World Championships in Ontario in November 2007 as one of the judges. Brett is the first Australian Technical Judge to be selected by the Expert Technical Committee for the Olympic Games. Brett was assessed at approximately five world cups, two world championships and over at least eighteen events.

Brett Austine first became involved in trampolining as a competitor at the age of seven years.

Brett won over 40 National Trampoline titles.  Brett also won 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals at World Open Championships (1978-1988).  Brett has also won 16 gold medals in Diving at the Australian Masters Championships.

Brett Austine attended Umina High School and was in the first year to go through to Year 12.  In this year, of 32 students it is interesting to note, there were three former open world champions.

Whilst at school Brett also represented in Basketball, Baseball and Rugby League for Sydney North Region.

In 2005 Brett Austine was nominated by Jo Swadling the principal of Marks Point Public School for the award of National Coca Cola Youth Fitness Leader.

Brett subsequently won this prestigious award and the prize that went with the honour.  The first prize was an opportunity to crew on Robert Swan’s boat the Active Factor in the 2005 Sydney to Hobart White Water Classic.  Robert Swan was the first explorer to walk to the North Pole and South Pole.

In the 80s Brett Austine was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions in the sport of Gymnastics.  He is presently the only gymnastics athlete to be inducted into the Hall of Champions.

Brett Austine holds the following positions:

  • Sport Coordinator Belmont High School (Current)

  • Hunter Region Trampoline Convener (1993-2008)

  • NSWCHS Trampoline Convener (1994-2008)

  • NSW Pacific School Games Diving Manager/Coach (2008)

  • NSW Gymnastics Judging Coordinator (Current)

As one can see as well as following his dreams and interests Brett Austine has a total commitment to Public Education and the students of his school and NSW.

NSWCHS would like to congratulate Brett Austine on his appointment to the Trampolining Judging Panel for the Beijing Olympics.  This is undeniably a wonderful reward and justification for all your hard work.
