14 July 2009 |
|
Six previous NSW CHS and NSW PSSA representatives are currently competing in the 2009 Samsung Women’s Champions Trophy hockey event at Sydney Olympic Park. The Champions Trophy is a prestigious annual international hockey event which comprises the top six-ranked teams in world hockey. Toni Cronk, Casey Eastham, Kate Hollywood, Emily Hurtz, Fiona Johnson and Airlie Ogilvie are among the talent lining up for the Hockeyroos. Airlie Ogilvie was a member of the NSW CHS hockey team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and now forms part of the talented and youthful Hockeyroos in 2009 at 21 years of age. Team mate Casey Eastham who represented NSW PSSA in 1999 and 2000 and NSW CHS in 2003 has cemented her place in the Hockeyroos after strong performances at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Eastham on the first day of play at the Champions Trophy set up Australia’s second goal against Germany proving just how talented she is. Emily Hurtz at just 19 years of age showcased her skill scoring Australia’s first goal against Germany. Hurtz like team mates Kate Hollywood, Toni Cronk and Fiona Johnson represented NSW CHS in Hockey throughout her high school years. On the second day of play at the Champions Trophy the Hockeyroos went down 1nil in a close encounter against Argentina. Goal Keeper Toni Cronk and defensive player Fiona Johnson worked well to minimise the opportunities of the skilful Argentinean attack. Kate Hollywood was instrumental for the Hockeyroos providing a number of scoring opportunities by winning her side several penalty corners. Despite the loss the Hockeyroos still remain strong contenders to win the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy competition continues throughout the week with the Hockeyroos facing China, England and the Netherlands. The finals take place on Sunday 19th July when the top two teams will fight it out for the prestigious title of Champions Trophy winners. We would like to congratulate the past NSW PSSA and CHS girls Hockey representatives on their achievements so far and wish them every success in becoming the 2009 Champions Trophy winners. Each of the girls had illustrious School Sport participation representing the following schools - Toni Cronk Padstow Park PS / East Hills Girls HS|
