|
One of the big days in School Sport is the eagerly anticipated final of the University Shield and the Buckley Shield. The NSWPSSA Rugby League Knockout Final was also part of this very exciting program. This state wide knockout for public schools is administered solely by the voluntary efforts of public school teachers. This final day and its planning and administration were undertaken by Grant Edwards and Paul Littlejohn of Caringbah High School assisted by Chris Mahony of The Hills Sports High School. The players competing in these finals had the thrill of playing at a first class venue, Toyota Park, the NRL home ground of the Cronulla Sharks. The Buckley Shield is a 14yrs competition divided into comprehensive high schools and sports high schools. Congratulations are extended to all players and their coaches on making the finals. Bass HS defeated Farrer Memorial AHS 46-22 Westfields Sports HS defeated The Hills Sports HS 40-nil The Classic Shield is the final of the NSWPSSA Knockout. Rutherford PS defeated Murrumburrah PS 20-6 The match was extremely entertaining with some superb ball skills displayed by these young players. Some of the standout players were Liam Leggett, Jake Morris, Mitchell Bennett and Jordan Burton from Rutherford PS. From Murrumburrah PS Ben Dibald, Dylan Arabin and Jared Prosser played well. Jared ran at least 60m to make a great try. The University Shield is the Open Age Schools event. This is also divided into two divisions for comprehensive and sports high schools. Bass HS defeated Dubbo Senior College 58-4 Dubbo Senior College tried hard despite the fact that the team was weakened with many of their players away on a tour. Charly Runicman, Max Ray (captain) and Tom Alchin performed very creditably for their side. The player of the match was Dale Finicuane (Bass HS). Also from Bass HS were Brendan Santi and Josh Rainbow who were players judged best for the year in this competition. The Hills Sports HS defeated Endeavour Sports HS 44-40 It was only in the last five minutes of this match that The Hills Sports HS edged in front with a try scored by Jason Seage and a conversion by Jason Wehbe. Jason Wehbe was outstanding scoring tries and many goals. Jason Wehbe was the worthy recipient of the Player of the Match award. Peni Terepo was judged the Player of the Year Jordan Petera, Nick Folino and Peni Terepo were other stand-out players. For Westfield Sports HS Kane Gilles played an excellent game of football along with Daniel Ahsin and Cameron King until he was injured. Both teams had many players with wonderful skills and astonishing ball handling skills which made the game a wonderful spectacle and a grand finale to the end of another school boy Rugby League season. Congratulations to David Whittock (Wauchope HS) the NSWCHS Rugby League Convener for his superb organisation of all matters pertaining to School Boy Sport.
