Some of the best young football players in the state have been identified and selected by the Sydney’s AFL team the Swans into their scholarship program. The students require AFL talent, good athletic credentials and the focus and determination to make it. The program offered to the boys has three main components. The skills acquisition component fast tracks the development of kicking, handball and marking skills. Through the Swans education program the boys are provided with advice and guidance in life style choices and exam preparation. They are taught good habits in diet choices and are given direction in recovery, strength and running programs. The boys are also taught time management skills with the emphasis being on a healthy balance in life. The boys are encouraged to be involved with all facets in their school career as most of their progress during these early years will be away from the club. The boys are taught relaxation skills to avoid break down and burn out. They boys are signed up with the club the year they turn 15 and are also given monetary assistance to help with their football development. Every Wednesday all the boys attend the club for training sessions. On match days once again the scholarship boys are with the club to help with the running of the day and to watch the seniors play. When the boys turn 18 they can be elevated on to the rookie or senior list and so can avoid the draft. Mitchell Crawford (Hunter Sports HS) has been awarded a scholarship in May 2009. Mitchell played very well at the School Sport Australia Australian Football carnival in Maroochydore at the beginning of term 3. Mitchell is competitive and focused with outstanding athletic credentials in speed, endurance and agility. Mitchell is described as very coachable and has played Touch and Rugby League at school. Mitchell plays for the Newcastle club. Blake Guthrie (Picnic Point HS) is a midfielder with good skills and endurance and outstanding application. Blake, a leader in the group, will be 18 yrs old in 2011and eligible for the draft. Blake plays in the South West Sydney Pigeons team. Blake was a member of then NSWCHS team in 2008. Mitchell May and Matt May (Bega HS) are both talented prospects from the South Coast. Mitchell is a key forward and Matt a mid fielder. Both boys played for NSWCHS. Jay Lewis (Terrigal HS) is an extremely enthusiastic and keen player displaying all round athleticism. His dedication and discipline is second to none. Jake a mid field forward player has played numerous games for the Swans Reserves. Jake also plays for the Pennant Hills Seniors. Congratulations are extended from NSWCHS to these boys on their selection in this prestigious program. We shall watch and follow your endeavours with interest.
