Section 6: APPROVED SPORTS - ACTIVITIES AND SPECIFIC RULES

6.7 CROSS COUNTRY STATE CARNIVAL RULES
     6.7.1 CHAMPIONSHIP RULES
  (a)

Entry to be on an Area basis only.

Regions who enter school teams may run up to ten runners including the school team members.

Regions who don't enter school teams may run a maximum of six runners.

Regional team placings will be determined by the lowest cumulative score from their first five runners (including school runners). Where less than five runners finish last place points plus one will be awarded for each non-finishing runner. Tie's will be split by the first team runners finishing positions.

  (b) The carnival shall be conducted over the following distances:
      BOYS GIRLS
    12 years 3,000 metres 3,000 metres
    13 years 3,000 metres 3,000 metres
    14 years 4,000 metres 4,000 metres
    15 years 4,000 metres 4,000 metres
    16 years 6,000 metres 4,000 metres
    17 years 6,000 metres 4,000 metres
    18 + years 8,000 metres 6,000 metres
    Schools Team 5,000 metres 3,000 metres
    Competitors must compete in their own age group. Age is how old a competitor is as of the 31st December in the year of competition. No competitor can turn 20 years in the year of competition.
  (c) Competitors must have their Regional number clearly displayed on front and back of team shirt / singlet.
  (d) All competitors must wear shoes.
  (e) The Brian Downes Memorial Trophies shall be presented to the winners of the girls and boys 17+ years Regional team events. The Anchor Kitchen Shields shall be presented to the winners of the girls and boys 17+ years schools team events.
  (f) All team members of first, second and third placed teams shall receive medals. The first three individual placegetters shall also receive medals.
  (g) The All School teams will be selected at the NSWCHS/All Schools Carnival as follows:
    (i) Boys U/14's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 12's and 13's races
    (ii) Girls U/14's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 12's, and 13's races.
    (iii) Boys U/16's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 14's and 15's races.
    (iv) Girls U/16's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 14's and 15's races.
    (v) Boys U/18's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 16's and 17's races.
    (vi) Girls U/18's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 16's and 17's races.
    (vii) Boys U/20's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 18 + yr's race.
    (viii) Girls U/20's team will be chosen from the overall fastest six times in the 18 + yr's race.
    (ix) Competitors in the Schools Team Event must be 14, 15 or 16 years of age in the year of competition.
  (h)   Spectators and coaches are not allowed to run along side a competitor at any time.
    (i) All protests must be lodged in writing to the Carnival Organiser from the Team Manager/ess within fifteen minutes of the conclusion of the event.
  (j) Protest Committee to consist of: Carnival Organiser, Convener, plus one other.
  (k) School team events will be conducted in each age group except the 18+ years age group.
  (l) School teams will comprise 4 runners with 3 to score.
  (m) There will be one school team per Region per race.
  (n) School team races, individual races and Region team races will be held concurrently over the same distance.
  (o) Individuals competing in school teams will also be representing their Region and consequently counting towards Regional point scores.
  (p) School teams will become eligible to compare at the NSWCHS Carnival by gaining first place at their Regional carnival or by a selection policy determined by their Area.
  (q) In the school team events at least 3 runners must finish to be eligible for a placing.
  (r) School runners will wear extra identification.
  (s) School team positions will be scored not by their race position overall, but relative to the other school teams, e.g. a school runner finishes 13th overall but is the 3rd school team runner home then he / she will score three points for his / her school team.
  (t) Athletes who qualify to compete at the CHS / All Schools Championships in the 14 years division can elect to withdraw from this age group and compete as an individual competitor in the 15 years division for the purpose of a time trial for consideration for selection in the NSW All Schools "School" team with the understanding that they are not eligible to receive medals or points.
  (u) An athlete who does not compete at the New South Wales Combined High Schools Championships may only be included in the team, if he/ she is competing at a National or International Track and Field/ Cross Country/ Triathlon or Mountain Running as part of a recognised ANSW or AA Team at the time of selection and has given prior notice to the Convener/ Selection Panel requesting consideration. This notification must be made to the Chairperson of the ANSW/ All-Schools Cross Country Committee, no later than two weeks prior to the date of the championships.
  (v) Students with a Disability
To be eligible to compete an SWD MUST meet the following criteria.
  • Each Region will be eligible to enter 2 competitors per event, per gender to compete at the State Championships.
  • All SWD’s at the Secondary level will run in a combined event over a distance of 3 km for all ages. (i.e 13 Year’s – 18+ Years all run - 3km)
  • Each SWD must compete in the Regional uniform.
    The qualifying time for SWD’s is
    Secondary Boys – 5 min / km or 15mins
    Secondary Girls – 6 min/ km or 18 mins
  • Each SWD athlete must complete the classification documentation for their disability category (prior to the State Championships) and forward to the Regional Sports Officer prior to the State Carnival. This documentation must be forwarded by Regional Sports Officer to Convener at least 3 weeks prior to the State Carnival.
  • Placing’s for events will be determined using the multidisability formula i.e. comparing the athletes time to the 5000m time for their classification and determining the percentage. All percentages for all disability classes will be calculated and the highest percentage wins, second highest second etc.
  • Each state/territory is entitled to enter two (2) athletes in each age/gender division at the School Sport Australia Championships provided the qualifying standards and classification standards have been met.
NOTE: Eligible students must choose prior to competing whether they will compete as an SWD or as an abled bodied athlete. If competing as an SWD they must complete the classification documentation.

Eligible for Secondary
Intellectually Disabled – ID (T20), Hearing Impaired – HI (T01),Physical Impairment (PI) This will be restricted to Cerebral Palsy – CP 7 & 8 (T36, T37 or 38) or Amputee T44, T45 or 46 or Visually Impaired T12 & T13
