SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Bankstown North Public School
is identified in the local community as being a very caring, child centred school strongly focused on student achievement and student welfare.  It serves a widely diverse and transient population – 90% NESB coming from 45 different cultural backgrounds.

Enrolments have steadily increased from 171 in 1996 to 230 in 2001.  The staff includes a mixture of young beginning and experienced teachers.  Staff is in excess of 90% female.  Most staff members are keen on fitness and sport with all supporting the programs that are in place.

The whole school is involved in a Fitness / Skills program three mornings per week and a 90 minute sports session on Friday afternoons.  Bankstown North participates in both Winter and Summer PSSA competitions as well as all District Carnivals.  The Fitness / Skills program is supported by annual testing in August.

RESOURCES
Great emphasis is placed on sport and fitness and the school has supported this with considerable purchases of suitable resources.  Funds have been granted from the School Sport 2000 Foundation, Bankstown RSL Club and Peter Wynn Sports (prizes).  Bankstown North PS is well equipped for most sports and activities.  Staff are generally not highly trained.  Limited training and development opportunities have been provided or sought in recent years.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Community involvement is very limited.  One community member helped coach and umpire the Netball team this year.  The Bankstown RSL donated funds to help construct an all weather cricket pitch.  The following associations and development officers have been active at the school: Basketball – Western Sydney Razorbacks, Cricket – NSW Cricket Assoc., Rugby League – Canterbury Bulldogs, Soccer – Parramatta Power.

OTHER SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
Development Officers have visited in a variety of sports: AFL, OzTag, Basketball, Golf, Rugby League Soccer and Cricket.
The school competes two or three times per year against Bass Hill PS for the Morgan Cup in various sports in Years 3 to 6.
The school holds its own Gala Ball Carnival, which involves golf, croquet, bocce, basketball, bowling and paddle tennis.

REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM
·
Consistency – year round
·                     Assessment-driven
·                     Variety – skills, fitness, competitive games, leisure sports
·                     Teacher Support
·                     Participation
·                     Enjoyment
·                     Being fit and healthy leads to better learning
