Introduction/Index

SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Gladstone Public School was established in 1877 and is located on the Macleay River.  The school is located at the business end of town, in close proximity to the council pool, police station and town churches.  As such, the school is a focal point of the town.  It is an integral part of most events which may occur in Gladstone through the year.  Both students, staff and parents participate towards maintaining a positive image for the school throughout the Macleay Valley. The school population is currently 60 students (30 boys and 30 girls). No NESB or ATSI students attend the school.

RESOURCES
Resources are allocated as a part of the total school PE/PD/Health budget.  For a school of our size, PP% (60 students), a budget of $1500.
$1200 to sport / equipment.  $300 inservice.
Note:  Due to the simple nature of the program, best results have been achieved by purchasing newer, functional equipment.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Our program is aided by the use of locals, both parents and citizens with expertise or energy.  In particular, assistance is sought during our Terms 1 and 4 when our swimming component is underway.  Parents are rostered to assist with the infants class.

OTHER SPORTING OPPOORTUNITIES
During the school year, the students are involved in any one of the following:
Sport Promotion Visits (eg. NSW Country RL Development Officer)
Local Small Schools Gala Days (eg. Tabloids)
NSW PSSA Carnivals (Swimming/Athletics/Cross Country)
NSW PSSA Sport Trials (Cricket/Rugby Union, etc)
Jump Rope for Heart

REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM
Strong sporting background / credentials of staff.
Excellent climate in which the school is located allows for a maximum number of days without interruption for bad weather days.
Excellent School playground – well grassed and with plenty of space (conclusive to all activities).
Well-behaved children who have a strong sporting heritage.
Encouragement awards ongoing throughout year – motivates children to participate.

Program Writers’ Notes
In 1991-1993 while working at Mt Warrigal PS (Shellharbour District), a similar program was put together by Mr Stan Whyte.  He was tragically killed in a motor accident in January 2001.  I wish to state that the bulk of the ideas in my program developed from my association with Stan Whyte and wish to credit him with its success (W. Craig 26/7/01)
