SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Harbord Public School
is situated in the Northern Beaches District of Sydney and is located in the village of Harbord.  The school has a strong tradition of community ownership, support and involvement through shared decision making and parental participation in school activities.  Harbord Public School places a strong emphasis on the basic skills and has a proud history of achievements in sport and performing arts.

In August 2001, there were 723 pupils enrolled in the school.  The gender ratio is 50% boys and 50% girls.  Approximately 15% of pupils enrolled at Harbord Public School are from a wide variety of Non-English-Speaking backgrounds.

Staffing
Principal – 1, Deputy Principal – 2, Assistant Principal – 2, Executive Teacher – 2, Classroom Teacher – 20, Teacher Librarian – 1.

Thirteen staff have experience in coaching school sporting teams for PSSA in netball, soccer (girls and boys), touch football, cricket, league, rugby, softball and teeball.

Eight staff have accreditation in:  Soccer Level 1, Netball Level 0, Gymnastics Level 0, Rugby League Level 0.

Two staff members are trained dance teachers.  Three staff members have training in the Special Swimming Scheme course.

Staff have experience at zone or area levels in the following:  Zone rugby league coach, Area rugby league selector, Zone rugby league convenor, Area rugby league manager, Swimming zone convenor, Zone touch football (girls) selector, Zone soccer (girls) selector, PSSA convenor – netball/softball/ teeball/touch football.

·       K-6 budget for year decided upon at Management Plan meetings following annual stocktake.

·       PSSA budget updated annually (user pays).
·       Distribution and Maintenance of sports store rooms equipment.
·       T&D obtained through visiting sports organisations eg. AFL, Kanga Cricket & Tennis groups, and user
          pays  programs eg. Gymnastics, sports skills and dance.


COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
 
·       
PSSA: parents assist with refereeing, umpiring, coaching, transport and as team spectators.

·         Parents assist at Freshwater Pool with Life Saving Skills in Term 4.
·         Sponsorship for PSSA teams eg. League jumpers, soccer shirts from local businesses.
·         Local Clubs eg. Tennis run programs.

OTHER SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
·         Development Officers in all sports visit regularly to run awareness programs eg. in Basketball, AFL,
           League, Soccer, Cricket.

·         Gala Days in AFL, Oz Tag, netball, soccer, league.
·         K-2 Sports Day.
·         3-6 Annual swimming, athletics, cross country carnivals.
·         PSSA State Knockout in soccer (boys & girls), rugby, rugby league, touch football (boys & girls),
           netball.

·         Recognised sports person attends annual Presentation Day to present Sports Awards eg. Sports
            Student of the Year and shield for any State Representatives.

REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM
·         Strong focus on school sport by Principal and School Leadership group.

·         Sports culture in school and community.
·         Wide sporting expertise and enthusiasm of staff.
·         The large number of opportunities children have to be part of school sports teams, PSSA teams,
             knockout teams etc.

·         Parents willing to pay for outside expertise to run some programs eg. dance, gym.
·         Enthusiastic and motivated children.
·         Motivated staff in Infants grades to teach beginning sports skills.
