SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Merrylands Public School
is unique for a school of its size in that five of our sixteen classes are specifically allocated for students with intellectual disabilities.  The integration of these students with special needs into all school programs and activities including sport, significantly influences the school content, culture and purpose.

The total school enrolment is currently 350 with 203 boys and 146 girls.  This gender ratio of 60% boys to 40% girls is significant and unusual.

Just over 60% of children come from non-English speaking backgrounds and 37 different languages are represented.

Merrylands P.S. has a significa nt mobility factor with over 20% of current enrolments arriving after the usual enrolment period at the beginning of the year.

Merrylands P.S. staff show a range of age, experience and qualifications.  Approximately 25% of staff have more than 20 years teaching experience, 25% between 10 and 20 years, 25% between 5 and 10 years and 25% less than 5 years.

All staff are involved in different aspects of the overall school sport program and a feature of the Primary weekly sport program in recent years has been class swapping to allow several K-2 teachers with interests or skills in sport to be involved in this program.

In 2000 and 2001, every combined District P.S.S.A. summer and winter representative team was coached by a Merrylands P.S. staff member, the District Swimming Carnival and Summer and Winter P.S.S.A. competitions convened by members of Merrylands P.S. staff.

RESOURCES
Resources are allocated to the sport program from whole school planning K-6 and indicated in the management plan/budget.  Equipment for all stages as requested by teachers for specific programs eg. mats for gym, skipping ropes, are bought under direction from sportsperson.  Teacher time to coach and attend sporting events at all levels is covered within school.  T&D is available to all staff to attend courses – Get Fit, Get Active, SDD – Gymnastics, Games Skills and program development.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The community is involved in many areas, volunteering for K-2 PE sessions, Fun Run (Cross Country), Athletics/Swimming Carnivals, transporting children to sporting events during school time or weekends, catering for events, laundering of P.S.S.A. uniforms and being supportive spectators.  The local Rugby League club support the school donating jerseys (RAMS) and allowing us to use their facilities.  The NRL club, Parramatta, provide a weekly award “Vellas Fella’s” for sportsmanship and a grant to buy R.L. equipment/gear.  The local high school shares equipment and allows us to use their grounds.  The local tennis courts and youth club also allow us to use their facilities.

OTHER SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
We participate in many Gala Days including – Paul Kelly Cup, Spring Cup, Swans Clinic, Rugby Union, Rugby League (7 a-side and Parramatta Knockout), Super 8’s Cricket.  Development Officers have visited in a variety of sports: AFL, Oz Tag, Rugby, Baseball.  Basketball, Touch, Gymnastics, Soccer and Cricket.

REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM
The enthusiasm and dedication of ALL staff to all students, no matter what level of ability, to participate in as many different sports as possible.
Parent and community support.
Integration of I.M and I.O children with mainstream children at all levels of sport from school based sport to district and even state level.
Organisation from sports teacher and support from Principal.
