SCHOOL
DESCRIPTION
Orange Public School is located in the central business district and
occupies twin sites with the K – 2 department and the 3 – 6 departments
two street blocks apart. We currently have 770 students enrolled with
approximately equal numbers of boys and girls. There are 28 classes.
While achievement in literacy and numeracy is our focus, comprehensive
curriculum coverage ensures students enjoy a balanced educational program.
The school offers all students the opportunity to participate in a skills
based weekly sports program for students 3 – 6, sporting teams and fitness
programs.
The
school boasts an experienced staff who demonstrate a willingness to support
a wide variety of sports in state knockout competitions. Teams entered
in 2001 include boys and girls cricket, soccer, basketball and touch;
girls softball, hockey and netball.

RESOURCES
Resources are purchased from school budget as required to support
the programs being implemented. Our Parents’ and Citizens’ Association
also makes a significant contribution to our sport and play equipment.
Eg. Fixed equipment on both sides.
Staff
training and development opportunities in Sport are extremely limited.
Most staff have developed their skills and knowledge in their own time
outside of school. We have, in recent years, enjoyed training and development
in the area of fitness and are currently part of the ‘Gold Medal Fitness’
program. This offers our team of four, opportunities to benefit from
training which they then share with colleagues.
COMMUNITY
INVOLVEMENT
Local sports association, eg. Soccer, (outdoor and indoor) netball, rugby
league, Australian Rules football, hockey, are involved to varying degrees
including the provision of additional equipment, planning and conducting
gala days, assisting with coaching and officiating. Parents play a vital
role, particularly in their support of our State Knockout Competition
teams when travel is required. We couldn’t compete without them. They
also offer assistance with coaching, particularly in sports which staff
believe they are not qualified to coach effectively.
OTHER
SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
Groups such as those mentioned above (5) seek opportunities to visit the
school to talk and work with students as well as organising gala days.
REASONS
FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM
Commitment of staff, students and community to fitness and sport programs;
willingness of staff to plan and implement interesting, relevant, varied
programs; the availability of good quality grounds and facilities within
close proximity of the school; availability of equipment and material,
parent support in assisting with transport and coaching; school philosophy
of ‘personal best’ and consistent acknowledgement at school assemblies,
presentation night, in weekly newsletter and local press of successful
endeavours by teams and individuals (success being measured in terms of
‘personal best’). The selection process for all State Knockout Competition
teams is fair and gives all aspirants equal opportunities to gain selection.
All teams entered in state knockout competitions know the rules of their
game, are well coached and therefore participate confidently. DET Codes
of Conduct underpin our constant promotion of fair play and good sportsmanship.
