Students

Trials are held for positions in the Grade Teams. Students who are not selected or do not trial for a Grade Team are given the opportunity to select a recreational sport following the completion of trials. Year 12 students have the opportunity to select first then down to Year 8. Students are able to select the same sport more than once especially if they are good at or enjoy the particular activity. Year 12 students with a few exceptions do sport until the end of Term 2.

Payments for recreational sports are made at the start of term for the whole term. Bus fares are paid each week as students get on the bus. House Captains are given responsibility for bus money collection each week.

Staff

Staff are asked to select the sport which they would like to be involved in and for which they have an interest. Staff members are then allocated to a sport. A personal approach by the Sport Coordinator to a member of staff is sometimes necessary to get them to change to a different sport.

Executive meetings are held every second week and all Head Teachers are strongly encouraged to go to sports venues when not involved in meetings. Head Teachers are allocated to a sport if there are insufficient staff on a particular day. The Sport Coordinators are located in the HSIE Faculty.

OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT

Knockouts and Gala Days

The school is involved in a large number of Combined High Schools Knockouts: - Volleyball (B&G), Netball (G), Water Polo (B&G), Hockey (B&G), Touch (B&G), Australian Football (B) Soccer (B&G), Tennis (B&G), Basketball (B&G).

The teams are made up of mainly Year 10-12 students but some keen juniors are able to make teams. There is always more students attending trials for knockout teams than can be accommodated. Staff members either volunteer or are coaxed by students to take teams. Teams train after school under staff supervision.

Other Student Participation

Large numbers of students participate in outdoor educational programs through involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the newly formed Cadet Corp.

Community Involvement

Referees and umpires from the community are used for knockout fixtures. These are usually obtained through student or ex-student contacts. Some ex-students assist with the coaching of school teams.

SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM

The whole school supports the current school sport program. Students want to participate and are successful. Sport is a tradition in the school and students attending the school do so knowing that they must participate in sport up to the end of Term 2 Year12. The staff are determined to focus on the education of the whole child, as many students do not play sport outside of school due to academic study and coaching commitments. Thus school sport is seen as important and most students enjoy it. Good communication and organisation assist the sports program. The school has had good success in a range of sports but the volleyball program has been outstanding. There is always a good attendance at major carnivals and the school always has a large representation at Zone.
