Water Street SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Blayney High School is a rural coeducational comprehensive secondary school located in the central western area of New South Wales. With 371 students the school seeks to empower them to exercise self-discipline in preference to having discipline imposed on them by others. In this way they are better able to modify behaviour into what is acceptable to all, within a fair and consistent set of guidelines, reflecting the expectations of all within the school. The school continues to show strengths with excellent individual and team performances in most sports in which the school participates. Volleyball continues to play a major role with both girls’ and boys’ teams making their mark in competitions. The boys have achieved tenth position in the state, while the girls have been Area Champions and twelfth in the state. SPORTS ORGANISATION Sports Program Contact Maureen Dickson, Sport Coordinator or Ian Tooke, Relieving Principal. The school conducts an Integrated/Scattered Sports program for students from Years 7 to 12 plus electives courses that are sport related. Sports are offered so that they are not being done in PE at the same time. The list shows sports that are offered depending on the season. Aerobics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, European Handball, Field Hockey, Fitness Activities, Frisbee Games, Golf (Seniors), Gaelic Football, Indoor Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Skipping (Skipfit), Soccer (Indoor and Outdoor), Scoop Ball, Softball/Baseball, Squash, swimming/ Water Polo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball, Vortex Football, Volley-Squash, Walking and Wheelchair Basketball. Students Students are offered a range of sports each trimester and select three (3) sports. They change sports every five weeks. Sports vary to suit the weather conditions and seasonal variation. Sport options are not those being taught in PDHPE. The school timetable is organised across seven lines. Sport is 2 periods per week (80 minutes). Year groups are allocated a set period on the timetable for sport. Years 11 and 12 sport has a more flexible program. Instead of being locked in to a particular sport, three sports are offered each week, (which vary according to weather) and students select. They may repeat a sport used for team training sessions, dance groups etc. Students are offered elective Coaching (includes First Aid) or Anatomy & Physiology in Years 9 and 10. Staff Staff members who are interested in taking sport, as far as possible are placed on the timetable. PDHPE staff are allocated at random with every effort being made to give each teacher a variety of sports. Non PDHPE staff are allocated sports according to interest, expertise and confidence. A comprehensive book is provided to staff consisting of lessons, warm ups, drills and roles for each sport offered. At least once per year staff are given inservice on how to organise and conduct sport sessions. When staffing numbers allow a PDHPE staff member will work with other staff for the first week to assist in organising the group. OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT Knockouts and Gala Days The school enters Combined High School Knockouts in the following sports: Cricket, Basketball, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Soccer, Softball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch, and Volleyball. Approximately 150 students participate in representative teams with 80% coming from Years 9-12. Nine staff out of thirty-five are involved in coaching and managing teams. All teams regularly train leading up to competition. Sessions occur at lunchtime, after school and sometimes weekends. In previous years, the school has had visits with Kelso High and Canobolas High. These visits were exclusively for Years 7 and 8. The visit with Kelso was successful because the emphasis was on participation and fun. There was no overall winner but some students were given sportsmanship medals. The school has also hosted a volleyball day with Oberon as well as a Wheelchair Basketball Day each year involving five (5) schools. Blayney High School has an interschool visit with Heathcote High School. The visit is on an annual basis and is for three (3) days. Blayney students are accommodated at Otford Christian Centre when in Sydney and Heathcote students Camp out at Carcoar Showground when in Blayney. The emphasis for the three (3) days is on fun and participation. There are also a lot of social activities included in the visit. Sports included in the visit are T-Ball, Indoor Hockey, Volleyball and European Handball. Other Student Participation Students recently officiated at the NSW Short Course Swimming Championships in Blayney. All students were instructed in the use of electronic timing system. Community Involvement The National Rugby League, Basketball, Cricket and Australian Football Associations all conduct clinics at the school for students. Members of the community are welcome to assist with coaching, refereeing and umpiring. SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM The integrated sports program allows for the maximum use of resources. All students are given the opportunity to be involved in a range of sports. Integrated sport allows greater opportunity for positive and successful experiences in sport. A very supportive Timetable Committee ensures that teachers are placed on sport who have a genuine interest and understanding of the social benefits of sport. |
