SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

Elderslie High School is a large coeducational comprehensive secondary school in southwestern Sydney. Its population of 1050 is drawn from an area adjacent to the Camden Township and surrounding rural district. The school has a tradition of excellent academic, sporting and cultural successes. At the basis of the excellent performances of students is the school’s welfare structure. The school has many links with the community particularly through the participation of the Elderslie High School Band and ensemble groups in a range of community functions. Elderslie has a good reputation in sport and in 2000 was the Champion School at the Combined High School Athletics Championships for the third year in a row. Elderslie students won representative selection in Athletics, Cricket, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Hockey, Soccer, Softball, Squash and Tennis. Nicole Robertson won the U20 Hammer at the Australian Track and Field Championships.

Sports Program

The school competes in the Macarthur Zone Grade Sport competition held on Wednesday afternoon. Grade sport is conducted for Years 7 to 11 during Terms 1, 2 and 3. Competition is conducted as Junior (7-8), Intermediate (7-9), Senior (7-10) and Open (7-12). No Grade Sport competition is conducted in Term 4

Summer

Boys – Volleyball, Kanga Cricket (no senior), Softball (no senior), Touch (no senior)

Girls – Basketball, Kanga Cricket (no senior), Softball (no senior), Touch (no senior)

Winter

Boys – Soccer (no senior), Hockey (Open only), Basketball, Oz Tag (no senior)

Girls - Soccer (no junior or senior), Hockey (Open only), Volleyball, Oz Tag (no senior), Netball (Junior A&B, Int A&B, Senior Open) - Ten Pin Bowling (2 teams of 8 Grade A&B)

Sport for Year 7 is also conducted on Wednesday afternoon.

Recreational Sports

Aerobics, Canoeing, Dancing, Environmental Activities, Golf, Indoor Sports, Lawn Bowls, Roller Skating, Self Defence, Slam Jam, Squash, Ten Pin Bowling, Tennis, Walking, Weight Training.

Term 4 Recreational Sport

Ballroom Dancing, Beginners Golf, Canoeing, Cricket Coaching, European Handball, Golf, Gym, Lawn Bowls, Lifestyle Weights, Mixed Touch, Rollerskating, Self defence, Streamwatch, Squash/Weights, Squash/Aerobics, Squash, Ten Pin Bowling, Tennis, Walking, Environmental Studies, Volleyball.

Year 7

Students

Students who do not wish to participate in Grade or Recreational Sport do sport at School.

Year 7 students not in Grade sport follow a separate program especially designed for Year 7 students.

All details are placed on notice boards prior to assembly and making grade choices. When all grade teams are filled then recreational sports are offered. Students are encouraged to participate in what they enjoy and what they can afford. The D.E.A.R. period, in classes, is used to select sport for term 4. All students pay $3.00 for grade sport travel irrespective of distance. Approximately $7.00 is the maximum for recreational sports. A Sports Coordinator supervises buses and collection of money.

Students on Sports Detention are given work to do that corresponds to the sport they should be in.

Staff

The school has five (5) Sports Coordinators with a total of eight (8) periods between them.

Staff may offer an alternate sports where they have particular expertise eg Lawn Bowls, Dance. Staff are asked to select a sport. The staff are then given a letter from the Sports Coordinator advising them of their sport and outlining the basic EHS sport procedures.

Good information is provided to staff including a Sports Management Plan which is part of the overall School Management Plan and School Sports Policy.

Staff are encouraged to attend suitable and appropriate inservice. Qualified staff are also encouraged to run inservice courses.

OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT

Knockouts and Gala Days

During Term 4 all members of the PDHPE faculty have input as to which Combined High Schools Knockout Competitions will be entered for the next year. Staff are given details and are invited to enter a team if not included on the list. At the first meeting of staff in a new school year, new members of staff are invited to put teams into Knockout competitions.

Boys

Girls

Basketball (Open & 15), Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby Union (Open), Soccer, Softball, Squash, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball

Mixed

Lawn Bowls, Swimming.

A document on ‘Knockout Competitions – Information to Coaches’ is issued. Teams must train in order to compete.

Other Student Participation

Development Officers for various sports have visited the school. This has occurred during BYE rounds in Grade Sport. Students assist as coaches and managers in Grade Sport. Students in Years 11 and 12 are encouraged to do this particularly when there are no staff available with appropriate expertise.

Students act as Officials at Cross Country. Students attend meetings to have their duties explained.

Community Involvement

Coaches and Umpires are available for a range of indoor sports at a nearby Recreational Venue. Parents with expertise officiate at school and zone carnivals. Parents are invited to do this. Local Referees Associations used for Knockouts.

SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM

The Head Teacher PDHPE supervises sport. All members of the PDHPE faculty are active and have a worthwhile role and make excellent contribution to organisation of sport. The teaching staff considers sport to be worthwhile and a significant part of the school curriculum. The community and parents support the school’s efforts. The school is successful in its sporting endeavours and students want to be a part of that success. Staff are given information and kept up to date with results and successes. Students are rewarded regularly on assemblies eg Sports Star of the month. Results and details are recorded in the Parent Bulletins. The school has a detailed Sports Policy and Sports Management plan in place both prepared by the Head Teacher.
