SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

The Forest High School is a coeducational comprehensive secondary school located close to the northern beaches of Sydney. The school has a population of 695 and aims to develop well-rounded confident students who strive for and attain their full potential in all endeavours: intellectual, cultural, technical, sporting and social. The teacher-student relationship is unique in its positive, mutually supportive nature promoting utmost co-operation. The school has had considerable success in its sporting endeavours with the U15’s Boys Water Polo team and the Girls Rugby Union team, both reaching the quarterfinals of the state knockout. The school competes in the Northern Beaches Association "Super Zone" competition with the Junior Girls Netball and Open Boys Basketball teams running out premiers. Two students from the school were involved in the Olympic Trials one in Swimming and the other in Athletics. The school has introduced the concept of "Sports Captains", in addition to House Captains, in order to enhance school spirit and assist with sport organisation, especially school carnivals.

Sports Program

The school competes in the Northern Beaches Super Zone Grade competition in Years 8-11. The Zone offers the following sports during Terms 2 and 3. The school fields teams in all sports.

Mixed Hockey

Boys – Junior and Senior Basketball, Soccer and Open Touch

Girls – Junior and Senior Basketball, Soccer, Netball and Open Softball and Touch

Recreational and Team Sports are offered during Term 1 and 4 and for part of Term 3.

Recreational Sports

Beach Games / Swimming, Beach Volleyball, Bushwalking / Beach Walking, Dance, Golf, Gymnastics, Mountain Bike Riding, Rock Climbing, Sailing, Self Defence, Skateboarding, Squash, Surfing, Taekwondo, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Weights, Yoga.

Team Sports

Badminton, European Handball, Indoor Cricket, Indoor Soccer, Volleyball.

Year 7 students do a variety of team based sports as part of an Integrated Sports Program. This program complements the PDHPE syllabus. When the timetable permits, all Year 7 classes have sport at the same time and a round robin competition occurs amongst the classes. The winners of this competition are recognised with special certificates.

Students

Grade trials are conducted over two consecutive Wednesdays. If students are not successful in one sport, they have a second opportunity to select a grade sport the following week. All students must trial for grade sport. Recreational Sports are then offered to students, unsuccessful in making grade teams. Students pay for Recreational Sports at the front office on a first come basis. Rolls are made up using OASIS. All students not wishing to do Recreational Sport are placed in Team Sport. Students are permitted to do the same sport in Terms 1 and 4.

Cost for Grade Sport and Team Sport is $20 and is included in the school sports levy. Recreational Sports have a separate levy per sport which is payable at the school office.

Staff

Staff members are asked to put names against sports on a list in the staff common room prior to grade trials. Staff members are then allocated to a sport according to their interest and expertise. The Sports Coordinator then speaks to individual members of staff concerning any sports not filled.

School Executive takes Sport with Executive meetings being held at another time. PDHPE staff is allocated to Integrated Sport according to the timetable.

The Zone organises a coaching afternoon on the last Wednesday of Term 1 for all coaches wishing updating of rules for the coming Grade season. Skilled staff takes these courses on a volunteer basis. First Aid and CPR training is conducted on a regular basis on the first Development Day of the year.

All staff involved in Integrated Sport is given lesson outlines and programs written by the PDHPE staff.

OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT

Knockouts and Gala Days

The school competes in 32 of the Combined High Schools knockout competitions. It also put teams in the Manly Warringah High Schools Rugby League night competition for U13, U16 and Open divisions played on either Monday or Wednesday nights. Both boys and girls teams are also entered in the Northern Beaches Water Polo competition at either Manly Pool or Warringah Aquatic Centre. Eight teams are entered including Open, U15, U14 and U13. Water Polo is becoming very popular in all years and with both sexes. Six students, ex-students and staff now hold Level 1 coaching certificates in Water Polo.

Approximately 20% Year 7, 40% Year 8, 60% Year 9, 70% Year 10, 60% Year 11 and 40% Year 12 are involved in knockout competitions. Nineteen (19) of the sixty (60) staff members take knockout teams. All teams train on a regular basis under the supervision of staff.

The school enters teams in the Gala Day held for Year 7 in September held for Mackellar Girls, Balgowlah Boys, Willoughby Girls, Davidson, Killarney, Mosman and The Forest High Schools and a Year 8 Gala day held in October. Sports played in the Gala Day are:

Boys - Touch, Soccer, Softball

Girls – 7-a-side Soccer, 7-a-side Hockey, Netball, Softball.

Other Student Participation

The Fitness Leader Course offered to Years 9 and 10 involves students doing a unit of work on coaching. The unit of work is conducted in conjunction with the Year 6 students from the local primary schools. This is done in association with the Dept. of Sport and Recreation and students receive recognition of their efforts through the issuing of certificates.

The Years 11 and 12 Sport Lifestyle and Recreation students help run school carnivals. They are given a unit of work before the carnivals in their classes. The 2 unit PDHPE students must coach a younger team as part of an assessment task. Piloted in 2001, students in Year 11 Sport Lifestyle and Recreation obtained AUSTSWIM qualifications working in conjunction with Warringah Aquatic Centre.

Other programs that operate are a regular Wednesday afternoon Indoor Soccer competition occurring in the school gymnasium and a Dance group which operates once a week after school.

The school holds a Year 11 verses Year 12 annual event in Rugby League for boys and Touch for girls. This competition was established in 1969 and the Northern Eagles Rugby League Football Club provides jerseys and referees for the occasion. Also a competition in soccer for Year 11 verses Year 12 was established in 1999.

Community Involvement

Continued parent involvement has allowed the school to participate in the knockout competitions. Parents help train Water Polo and Rugby League teams as well as assisting with umpiring and transport. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be coaches etc. for Grade Teams and encouraged to be involved with recreational sports. In addition Manly Warringah Sea Eagles provide umpires for specialty matches when required.

SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM

The school sport program caters for a wide range of student interests and skills through the provision of Grade, Recreational, Traditional and Integrated Sports. An enthusiastic and dedicated staff, with skills and knowledge of games makes the program possible. This commitment extends to taking teams in weekend and night competitions. The Principal sees the value of sport to the total education of students and is fully committed to the program. The Sport Coordinator is given appropriate time allocation to organise sport. The "Super Zone" is a good concept and relies on the commitment of the Sports Coordinators in all of the competing schools.

An Annual Sports Awards Evening recognises the contributions of all participants in a spectacular night of entertainment and motivational speeches, culminating in the presentation of the Pierre de Corbertin award and the Junior and Senior Sports persons (male and female) for the year. These awards are decided by staff and parents who are invited to nominate and vote. Ex-students of The Forest High School who are still excelling in their chosen sporting fields present awards.
