OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT

Knockouts and Gala Days

The school enters all Combined High Schools Knockouts except Boys Softball and Baseball. Teams train during Wednesday afternoon sport, before school and after school. Teams must train in order to take part in Combined High Schools competitions for a minimum of five (5) training sessions before competing.

The school takes part in the Year 7 Gala Day organised for local schools. Most Combined High Schools Sports are conducted on this day except Rugby, Australian Football and Cricket.

The school is also involved in the Apollo Cup with South Grafton where points are scored for each time the schools play each other during the year.

Other Student Participation

Year 11 PDHPE students are involved in a ski trip and a number of students are involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Years 9-10 Sports Coaching elective classes help with Primary School Athletics Carnivals as Officials and also do some coaching with Primary Schools.

Community Involvement

There is a good involvement of outside specialist coaches assisting staff with knockout teams. Community members play a vital role in signing Seniors Log Books.

SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM

Year 7 Scattered Sport is very successful. It takes numbers out of Wednesday afternoon sport and thus assists in the use of local facilities. With PDHPE specialists assisting generalist teachers, better instruction and organisation is involved.

"The aim of sport at Grafton High School is to provide the opportunity for talented students to train and compete at an elite level. As well as training for the elite the sport afternoon provides the opportunity for all students to participate in physical activity as well as to further develop the skills they have gained in Physical Education classes. School sport is an integral part of the school curriculum and as such all students (excluding Year 12) are required to participate in the sport program unless exempt by the Principal. Other exemptions may be granted for medical reasons or physical disabilities" – taken from school sport policy.

The Head Teacher PDHPE chairs a Sports Committee and assist in following up on truancy. Any student who misses sport without a note prior to the sports afternoon is recorded as a TRUANT. "Parents are reminded that permission to miss sport to go home during school time cannot be granted and should not be requested. Students are required by law to be in attendance at all school activities".

The school sport policy indicates if truancy occurs the following repercussions will occur

First offence sports detention

Second offence banned from school socials

Third offence as previous plus banned from representing school sporting teams

Fourth offence as previous plus banned from all non-essential excursions or representing the school in any activity
