Beresford Road SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Greystanes High School is a coeducational comprehensive secondary school located in the western suburbs of Sydney. The school has a student population of 957 and provides a broad range of learning experiences in the junior and senior years. It encourages academic, cultural, vocational, sporting and community commitment. From Year 7 students take part in subject selection processes and undertake units of study that suit their personal talents and skills. All students participate in a comprehensive House Group system where they work together in a mixed age group. Students develop their social and life skills in this setting. It is here that the school’s culture of care is nurtured and where positive peer influences are encouraged. The school’s sporting reputation was confirmed in 2000 through both participation and performance. Success in track and field, team sports and swimming included the outstanding efforts of ten students who represented the school. Many students and staff were involved in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games as volunteers and two students were escort runners for the Olympic Torch Relay. SPORTS ORGANISATION Sports Program Contact Donna Crowley, Sport Coordinator or John Hardgrove, Principal Greystanes High School competes in the Prospect Zone Grade competitions conducted on a Tuesday afternoon. The Zone conducts three competitions, Summer, Winter and Spring for Years 7 to 12 in Open (16 and over) and Junior (15’s) divisions. Australian Football, Basketball, Baseball, Cricket, Hockey, Oz Tag, Soccer, Softball, Touch, Volleyball and Water Polo Girls Grade Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Newcombe Ball, Oz Tag, Soccer, Softball, Touch, Volleyball and Water Polo Recreational Sports Aerobics, Golf, Girls Weights, Indoor Basketball, Iceskating, Indoor Climbing, Indoor Cricket, Power Walking, Squash, Swimming, Ten Pin Bowling, Rollerblading, Weights House Sport Basketball Boys Year 8, Touch Boys Year 10, Soccer Boys Year 9, Softball Girls Year 9, Netball Girls Year 10-12, Touch Girls Year 8. Year 7 Sport Competition 1&2 Netball Girls, Soccer Boys, Swimming (by House Groups), Touch Boys, T-Ball Girls, Cricket. Students Sports selections are done in House Groups. Students must trial for a Grade team. Students who do not make a Grade Team then may choose two Recreational Sports and are placed in the sports based on oldest year down to youngest year. Some students choose to do House Sport. Students do not get to do the same recreational sport twice in a row. Some students however, may do the same Grade Sport more than once. Sport Coordinators and Head Teachers collect money at the bus bay on a rotational basis. The average cost for grade sport is $3.00 per week when travelling. Recreation sport costs range from $3.00 to $8.50 per week depending on the sport. Staff Staff is surveyed concerning their expertise and interest and is asked to select a sport. The Sport Coordinators then appoint the Grade Coaches. Staff is placed on Recreational Sport and House Sport on a need basis and also according to experience. Every attempt is made to share the roles around. The school has an award for the Coach of the Year, which is presented at the Annual Sport Awards Ceremony. Some inservice has been conducted at Zone and Area levels. Staff has been encouraged to gain qualifications and some have achieved this in Athletics Officiating and Coaching. OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT Knockouts and Gala Days The school is involved in 27 Knockout sports run by Combined High Schools, including: Australian Football, Baseball (boys & girls), Basketball – Open & 15 years (boys & girls), Cricket (boys & girls), Hockey (boys & girls), Netball (boys & girls), Rugby League – Open and U/15, Rugby, Soccer (boys & girls), Softball (girls), Tennis (girls), Touch (boys & girls), Volleyball (boys & girls), Water Polo – Open & 15 years (boys & girls). Greystanes has had a long and proud involvement in Knockouts over the years. Much of the success and certainly the enjoyment gained by students have come from the efforts put in by the coaches. The school is also involved in the Sydney West Area Gala days conducted for 13 and 15 boys and girls in Netball, Touch and Volleyball. Other Student Participation The school provides a range of courses in PDHPE for students from Years 7 – 10 in a vertical structure. A large number of students elect to do 2 unit PDHPE and Sport Lifestyle and Recreation courses in Years 11 and 12.
The school has recently established a $1000 grant for talented sports people to assist with their travel costs when representing the school at State or Australian Levels. Students from Greystanes High School have been involved in officiating at Combined High Schools Swimming and Athletics Championships for a number of years. Some training to fulfil the positions has been undertaken over the years by students. Students have worked at Athletics Australia Events such as Sydney Grand Prix, Australian Championships, World Juniors in 1996 and the Olympic Trials. A number of students were selected to work as basket handlers at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Athletics and as tribune runners to the international press at the Olympic Swimming Competition. The school has a Sport Award for a student who has contributed to the Sporting Program through officiating, administration etc. At any one time sixty-five (65) students are involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The students enjoy the Outdoor Education section of this program, which is run both in school time and on weekends. Community Involvement Occasionally community members are involved with knockout teams and with Triathlon Coaching. SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM The school sport program offers a great deal of variety for both talented and interested students and those not so good at sport. With recreational sports being rotated, every student eventually gets the opportunity to do at least one. |
