Oxford Street SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Kingscliff High School is a coeducational comprehensive secondary school located on the far North Coast of NSW. It draws its population of 1293 students from a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds. The school seeks to achieve excellence in all areas of school life and to provide opportunities for all students through a flexible, adaptive and inclusive curriculum. Students are encouraged to seek knowledge and competencies appropriate for employment, leisure and lifelong learning through development of self esteem and self discipline. The school has an outstanding representative record with several students in 2000 representing at an international level in soccer, athletics, surf life saving and gymnastics. Representative teams also achieved well with state titles in Rugby Union and Swimming. In addition five (5) students ran as Olympic Torch Bearers or Support Runners in 2000. SPORTS ORGANISATION Sports Program Contact Ian Ludeke Sport Coordinator or David Walshe Principal The school conducts a traditional sports afternoon on Wednesday for all students. The sports program is well balanced and varied in its structure. Term 1 offers team and recreational sports plus skills based development for Year 7. Term 2 sees the school involved in an Inter School sports program with the three other government schools in the area and the two local Catholic schools. Term 3 Intra School Sports Program with Term 4 offering only recreational style activities. Sport groups are vertically integrated except for the Year 7 Skills Based program. Term 1 Aerobics, Basketball, Beach Running, Beach Volleyball, Beach Walking, Cricket, Dance, Girls Soccer, Indoor Cricket, Kayaking, Netball, Skating, Softball, Snorkelling, Surfing, Surf Skills, Surf Survival, Tennis, Touch, Tweed Fitness, Volleyball, Yoga. Year 7 Boys Sport Skills – Cricket, High Jump, Javelin, Soccer, Swimming, T-Ball, Touch, and Volleyball. Year 7 Girls Sport Skills – Cricket, Netball, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Touch, Volleyball. Term 2 Girls Netball A, B, 15, 13A, 13B, 14; Basketball A, B, 15, 14; Soccer A; Volleyball A, B, 15; Hockey A 15; Softball A, 15; Touch A 15; Tennis A, 15. Students in Years 8-12 who miss out on a team are offered the following sports – Aerobics, Aquarobics, Beach Games, Beach Walking, Body Combat, Fishing, Indoor Cricket, Karate, Kayaking, Power Walking, Soccer, Tennis, Touch, Yoga plus Year 7 Boys and Year 7 Girls skill development. Term 3 Aerobics, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Beach Games, Beach Walking, Dance, Fishing, Kayaking, McDonalds Touch, Netball, Self Defence, Snorkelling, Softball, Soccer, Surfing, Tennis, Tweed Fitness, Volleyball, Yoga. Term 4 Aerobics, Aquarobics, Archery, Basketball Skills, Beach Games, Beach Walking, Fishing, Dance, Golf, Guitar, Kite Flying, Indoor Cricket, Kayaking, Meditation, Self Defence, St Johns First Aid, Snorkelling, Surf Skills, Surf Survival, Swimming, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Touch, Volleyball, Yoga. Students Students are all encouraged to trial for a Grade Team. These trials are conducted in Term 1. If students are unsuccessful in the first week of trials then they attend the trials for a different sport in week 2 and again in week 3. All teams train during the fourth week. Those students who have not been selected in a team are then offered a range of team and recreational sports. All students are encouraged to select a variety of sports so that others can get an opportunity. All students involved in Grade teams pay $18.00 to the school office where a receipt is issued. This receipt is then shown to the team coach and recorded on the role. The cost includes transport, ground hire and uniforms. A large sports budget, as part of the overall school budget, is used to offset additional costs. Sports groups are vertically integrated except for the Year 7 Skills Based program. Staff Staff is allocated to a sport according to qualifications, expertise and interest. All staff nominate to take a particular sport and are then allocated by the Sport Coordinator after assessment of the overall needs. Head Teachers are viewed as the most experienced members of staff take a sport. 80% of staff are involved in sport in Terms 1, 3 and 4 with 95% involvement in Term 2. Training is provided in Sports Safe, CPR and First Aid. This training is conducted during school development days. In addition the school supports staff if they wish to attend courses provided by outside organisations or the Area. OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT Knockouts and Gala Days The school competes in, thirteen (13) Boys and thirteen (13) Girls, Combined High Schools Knockouts. The school also enters both girls and boys teams in competitions in Queensland in Rugby Union and Touch and other knockouts, which are available eg. the Bill Turner Soccer and Yeats Shield. Participation are high with 5% Yr 7, 20% Yr 8, 35% Yr 9, 35% Yr 10, 35% Yr 11 and 20% Yr 12 involved. Approx 40% of staff are involved with knockout teams as coaches or administrators. All teams train on an average of twice a week either after school (1 hr) or at recess (35min). Other Student Participation The school conducts a talent enhancement program for elite students. This program is not aimed at providing additional coaching in the sport but rather at identifying the need which elite sports students have to access additional time. Time to complete homework, assignments and to study. The sports coordinator liases with staff on behalf of elite sports students, to assist with required dead lines. Staff are generally most supportive. The school has also run courses for elite sports students on such things as goal setting and sport psychology. Year 11 students involved in Sport Lifestyle and Recreation, with the guidance of the Sports Coordinator, plans and conducts the long distance swimming carnival. This is a unit of work within the course. Year 9 Sport Science students assist the Sports Coordinator in the conduct of the School Cross Country Carnival. The work and planning for this is done within the class. Year 9 students act as officials on the day. The school often plays host to visiting schools from overseas eg Rugby teams from UK and NZ, Netball from NZ. In addition the Japanese students from local Jockey and Stable Hands Training School, occasionally play basketball against Kingscliff High Japanese language students. A number of the students from the school, trial for, and participate in competitions in Queensland. The school has representatives in Queensland teams in Australian Football, Softball, Hockey and Triathlon. Community Involvement The school encourages the involvement of all stakeholders in the sporting programs. Whilst staff develop and implement the programs, parents often act as coaches, instructors, umpires, referees and assist with transport. Parents are invited to participate as officials at the school carnivals. Members of the community act as officials, umpires and referees for competitive sport and are normally appointed by the appropriate local sports association. Some sport organisations provide persons to help coach and run clinics. All school sporting results and achievements are reported in the Local Newspaper and the School Newsletter. SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM Sport is regarded as an integral component of the school curriculum. It is strongly supported by the parent body and wider community. Staff is very enthusiastic in the way they are involved and actively promote school sport through a shared vision. Student participation rates are extremely high in all individual, team and recreational sports as well as in physical education classes. The Principal is enthusiastically committed to all aspects of the school’s sports program and to promoting the benefits of sport as a core part of a healthy and productive lifestyle. The weekly competition in Term 2 between four Government Schools and two local Catholic Schools brings out the best in students selected in these teams. A place in these representative teams is highly sort after by students who see it as prestigious to represent their school. The Principal attends as many of these Term 2 games and knockout games as possible. Students appreciate the support of the Principal and Head Teachers, most of whom coach school representative teams, alongside numerous of the teacher colleagues. The very high levels of sporting attainment achieved by such large numbers of Kingscliff High students helps build individual and corporate self esteem and self confidence. This in turn generates further sporting success across all levels of participation and competition. It contributes significantly to high levels of student participation and success, in academic, cultural and civic endeavours, thereby enhancing the total reputation of our students, teachers and our school. |
