North Parramatta NSW 2151 SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Macquarie Boys Technology High School is a single sex, comprehensive secondary school located in the western suburbs of Sydney. With a student population of 342, the school strives to promote excellence in learning through care and discipline. Many students achieve excellent results in traditional areas such as mathematics, creative areas such as visual arts, in social sciences and in sport. The students in the school come from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Many students live beyond the local area as there is a strong tradition in some families to have all their sons educated at Macquarie Boys High. They learn and interact together in a positive, tolerant and productive multicultural environment. A close working relationship exists with Macarthur Girls High School with a number of extra curricular activities being conducted. The school is a member of the Metropolitan North Western Zone School Sports Association and over half of the students represent at a zone level. The 13s Rugby Union team was Zone Premiers in 2000 and the 15s Baseball; Junior Indoor Soccer and Open Rugby Union teams all made the finals. The school has a strong commitment to equity in sport, which was exemplified by the school’s commitment to the Paralympics. Two recent ex-students were Paralympians in 2000 one in Fencing and the other in Wheelchair Rugby. The school hosted a reception for the Zimbabwean Paralympic Athletics Team along with one of the former students. SPORTS ORGANISATION Sports Program The Metropolitan North West Zone conducts competitions for 12 years to Opens, on a Wednesday afternoon. Summer Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball, Water Polo. Winter Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Indoor Soccer, Rugby Union, Soccer, Tennis, Table Tennis. Non Grade Cricket, Soccer, Softball, T-Ball, Tag Gridiron, Touch, and Walking. Students Students select a grade sport and attend trials. If students miss out on a grade team then they select a school sport. Students can select the same sport more than once especially if they have an interest in that sport. All students are keen to be involved in school teams including Year 12. Students pay $5.00 per fortnight with a $5000 subsidy from the school for buses for grade sport. School sport is mainly cost neutral but some venues do have an additional cost. Staff Staff volunteer to take a particular sport and are then appointed according to their experience and interest. Head Teachers take sport, as they are the role models. Some staff members attend training programs undertaken during a Zone School Development Day. Rugby Union training programs are conducted frequently. OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT Knockouts and Gala Days The school competes in Open League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Cricket, Volleyball and Junior Rugby Union and Rugby League knockout competitions. Approximately 20% of students and five members of staff are involved. Students train at lunchtime and after school. The school participates in the Zone Gala Days in Golf and Squash. The school has an Interschool visit with Lithgow High School on an alternate home and away basis with students being billeted by the host school. Sports Played: - Archery, Basketball, Bowls, Cross Country, Fishing, Golf, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball. Community Involvement Association Referees and some students or family members who are referees are used when necessary and available. SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM The students have a very positive attitude towards sport. Zone sport is of extreme importance to the school and the students. They value grade sport and see it as an honour to make a grade team. Many come from out of the area to participate in the Grade Sports Program. Over 50% of the students are involved in grade sport at anytime. At least 70% would have participated in grade sport teams at some time while at school. Parents and staff are also supportive. The Zone competition is extremely well run and supported by the Principals in the Zone. |
