Students

Sports choices are conducted over a five (5) period time span, one period for each year group. Students sit in roll class lines, rolls are marked and one line at a time selects their sport. Students must participate in grade sport for a minimum of two terms. Then they can change to house sport or do grade sport again. The rationale behind this is to keep grade sport running. Students not involved in Grade Sport Teams do House Sport. Year 12 is expected to do sport in Term 1 only.

There is no cost involved for students in grade sport. The average cost for students taking Recreational sport is $4.00. The teacher collects all moneys for sport at the venue.

Staff

Staff members have the opportunity to select three (3) sports one of which must be a grade sport. The Sport Coordinator then allocates staff to sports. Head Teachers do sport for one semester. This shows the staff that there is a whole school commitment to sport.

The Zone Convener sometimes organises sports training.

OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT

All Year 7 students participate in a Gala Day during Term 1. Students are split into teams in the following sports: Cricket, Netball, Soccer, Softball, and Union. They train every Wednesday afternoon for a Gala Day late in Term 1. Union and League are conducted as Round Robins.

Other Student Participation

Aboriginal students get the opportunity to participate in Rugby League and Netball.

The school has run Hispanic Dance as a multicultural sports program in previous years.

Students are utilised as officials for the School Carnivals under the instruction of the Sports Coordinator. Students are used as referees on occasions where they have obtained a referees ticket externally.

Community Involvement

Community instructors are used for Dance and Yoga. The assistant coach for the Girls Basketball Team is a parent.

SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM

Students have the opportunity to participate in both grade and traditional sports. Over the year all students must participate in both grade and traditional sport. The school is close to most venues so travel and cost have a minimal impact.

There is minimal truancy from sport because the Sport Coordinator follows up absences on a regular basis and appropriate action is taken.

The Principal had the opportunity to include the position of Sport Coordinator when advertising for a PDHPE teacher. This has meant that the school has a Sports Coordinator who is fully committed to the position. The Principal sees that sport is part of the whole school and feels it has an impact of a positive nature in the classroom.
