SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Walgett High School is a coeducational comprehensive secondary school located in the far north west of New South Wales. The school has a population of 162 and is spread over five hectares. The school incorporates a special education unit and a distance education centre is attached to the school. The school is known for its student welfare, behaviour management and Aboriginal education programs and prides itself on developing well-rounded individuals who achieve lifelong learning. The school offers a range of sporting activities that are closely aligned to the school’s Student Welfare Policy. The school and students have regularly achieved success at zone and state level. In 2000, the school was State semi finalists in Rugby Union - U15 Buchan Shield. Fifty students represented the Castlereagh zone at various sports with five students making North West area teams to contest state championships. Apart from the Rugby team, Walgett High was area finalists in Table Tennis and Australian Football and area semi finalists in Touch and Open Rugby League. SPORTS ORGANISATION Sports Program Contact Peter Nichols Sport Coordinator, or Ann McGee Principal The school conducts a Traditional Sports program on Wednesday afternoon each week. Sports offered to students: Boys – Rugby League Training, Tennis, Squash, Bike Riding, Golf, Bowls, Horse Riding. Girls – As above plus Rock Eistedford, Girls Knockout Sports Training. Students Students select their sport option commencing with Year 12 and working down to Year 7. Football is compulsory for Boys who wish to play football in competition teams. Generally students get their first choice. Students are able to do the same sport all the time especially if they are good at it or like the sport. Senior students are involved in sport. Girls Knockout Training is now compulsory for girls who wish to represent the school. Staff Staff members are allocated to a sport according to interest and expertise. Staff members get three choices and are usually given their first. Staff members are encouraged to attend coaching courses when the opportunity arises. OTHER SPORT INVOLVEMENT Knockouts and Gala Days The school enters teams in the Combined High Schools knockout competitions. Both - Basketball (Open & 15’s), Cricket, Hockey, Soccer (15’s), Squash, Touch, Volleyball, Lawn Bowls, Table Tennis, Rugby Union (Open & 15’s), Water Polo. Girls - Netball, Softball. Boys - Rugby League (Opens & U14's) Approximately 75% of the school involved in Knockouts and approximately 25% of staff. Teams train during sport or other arranged times. The school competed in the Athletics NSW All Schools Knockout for North West Area gaining valuable experience. The Neville Thorne Shield is held in Walgett each year for Rugby League. It involves approximately six to eight surrounding schools. The school participates in any Gala Days available. Other Student Participation Walgett High School has a program operating with Westfields Sports High whereby two groups of boys each year are sent to Westfields for a two week period. The students attend class and are also involved in the Targeted Sports Students program. Hoping to send some girls this year. The Sports Coordinator conducts a Sports Program for Students at Risk. Community Involvement Community members are often involved as Referees or assistants. SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM Students train for particular sports during sport time. Eg footballer train every Wednesday afternoon for virtually the whole year. League and Union train together as a squad. Athletics train 2 to 3 times per week including sports afternoon. Sport time can be used flexibly by staff to coach teams. The school runs a traditional sports afternoon after having tried Integrated Sport but due to too few students it did not function well. Any child wishing to play Rugby League does so and then other sports are offered. |
