DET one day AUSTSWIM course for teachers

COURSE FEE:      $198.00 (includes GST)

This course is designed for teachers wishing to acquire the nationally recognised qualification in 'Learn to Swim'.  This course is an abridged version of the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety accreditation that recognises skills all teachers possess.

This presentation is available to NSW DEC teachers. Participants must have a current CPR.

Candidates will be granted prior learning recognition for particular topics for the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course. Nominal hours of theory presentation have been shortened to reflect the educational background of presenters and participants. Candidates will be assessed on this knowledge through a combination of theory and practical assessment.

This DEC course is registered professional development under the terms of the NSW Institute of Teachers Continuing Professional Development policy.  For teachers accredited at Professional Competence, completion of this course will contribute 8 hours towards Institute Registered professional development. This course will address the following Professional Teaching Standards: 2.2.3, 3.2.2, 3.2.4, 5.2.2.

NOTE: A cancellation fee of $99.00 will apply if insufficient notice is provided 
Topics treated will include the needs of the beginner, safety, principles of movement and stroke progression.

Participants will need to bring:

  • swimming costume
  • towel
  • Goggles (optional but strongly recommended)
  • warm clothes /  tracksuit
  • writing material

Assessment tasks include

On the day of the course:

  1. Continuous Aquatic Sequence - comprising of float, scull, tread water for 1 to 2 minutes, swim underwater 2-5 metres, resurface swim 40-50 metres on front rotate swim 40-50 metres on back and exit the water.  These need to be done in a continuous sequence.  A practice beforehand is recommended. 

  1. Water safety and rescue – candidates will be instructed and then assessed on various rescue techniques and initiative rescues. 

Following the course and within 12 months:

  1. Exam – to be completed online with 100% accuracy. There is no time limit and if an incorrect answer is given candidates will be asked another question.

  1. Micro lesson plans – show lesson plan for a micro lesson (approx 5 min) that would make up part of a full 1hr lesson. Each 1 hour lesson would have approximately 5 micro lessons included

  1. Lesson Plans – show full lesson plans for a beginning group, an intermediate group and an advanced group

  1. Teaching Assessment – up to 20 hours of supervised teaching experience followed by and assessment of teaching competency. This can be completed during the School Swimming Scheme (SSS) for your school or at a later date. If electing to be assessed at a time separate to your school SSS please liaise with the School Swimming Scheme AUSTSWIM accredited instructors.

  1. Candidates must have a current CPR for the accreditation to be issued.
