Over 500 teachers throughout NSW, have participated in the AUSTSWIM courses coordinated by the DET School Sport Unit.  Information regarding the 2008 AUSTSWIM courses to be offered is provided below;

This presentation is available to NSW DET teachers.

  • Participants must have a current CPR to gain the AUSTSWIM accreditation
  • Course fee $165.00 (inc GST)

This course is for teachers who wish to become qualified teachers of learn to swim. This course is an abridged version of the ‘AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety’

The NSW Department of Education and Training, School Swimming Scheme is a recognised course provider for AUSTSWIM.

The DET One Day AUSTSWIM course grants candidates prior learning recognition for particular topics for the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course. Nominal hours of theory presentation have been shortened to reflect the educational background of presenters and participants. Candidates will be assessed on this knowledge through a combination of theory and practical assessment.

This course is theory based and candidates have 12 months from the day of the course to complete all other areas of assessment. Further information for candidates on the accreditation process and assessment tasks is outlined in the  Candidate Information and Accreditation Pathway document.

This DET course is registered professional development under the terms of the NSW Institute of Teachers Continuing Professional Development policy.  For teachers accredited at Professional Competence, completion of this course will contribute 8 hours towards Institute Registered professional development.  This course will address the following Professional Teaching Standards: 2.2.3, 3.2.2, 3.2.4, 5.2.2.

NOTE: these will be the only courses run by DET in 2008. $165.00 fee includes course manual, presenters’ fees, venue hire and refreshments

Topics treated will include the needs of the beginner, safety, principles of movement and stroke progression.

Participants will need to bring:


  • swimming costume
  • 2 x towels
  • goggles (optional)
  • eye drops if sensitive to chlorine
  • warm clothes /  tracksuit
  • writing material

Participants will undertake some assessment tasks. These include:

  • 150m swim - comprising of 50m of a competitive stroke and 100m using two survival strokes. There is no time limit.
  • Teaching Assessment – to be completed by each candidate seeking full accreditation. This can be completed during the School Swimming Scheme (SSS) for your school or at a later date. If electing to be assessed at a time separate to your school SSS please liaise with the School Swimming Scheme AUSTSWIM accredited instructors.
  • Exam – to be completed within 60 days of participation in presentation. Exam to be completed under supervision of school Principal or delegated officer.
